Pirate Metrics is an outstanding tool used to develop successful strategies for measuring customer behavior and product success.
This high level measurement framework (called Pirate Metrics because walking around using the acronym AARRR will make you sound like a pirate, no matter how hard you try not to) divides customer behavior into five areas that will significantly increase your chances of product success…if you plan for them and track them.
The Five Metrics You Should Always Consider
Acquisition – Can you get people to the system? Can you get them to the product, the feature, the app?
Activation – Can you get people to actually use it? How good is the customer’s first experience?
Retention – Can you get first-time users to use it again? And again? And to use more features or associated services? How can you get customers to regularly use your product? (Hint: Stay in touch with your customers.)
Revenue — Can you get someone to pay for it? This is kinda important.
Referral — Can you get users to tell someone else about it? Their boss, their friend, the internet?
Generally speaking, almost all customer behaviors fall into one of these five piratey areas.
Start your product development by answering these questions. Then continually monitor these areas to adjust your path. By thinking like a pirate talks, you’ll increase your chance of success.
